PUB - Investigating electrostatic flow charging using a small scale test bench

20/09/2018

A paper on “Investigating electrostatic flow charging using a small scale test bench” was published at the ASME Symposium on Fluid Power and Motion Control in Bath.

Everyone experienced electrostatic discharges first hand at least once when using an escalator. Generally speaking this type of discharge does not pose a problem. In a hydraulic system on the other hand such a discharge might be the cause for system failures. The phenomenon was first investigated in the engineering sciences by researches of the field of petro-chemistry and electrical engineering. Models resulting from these efforts are currently not suited for the application in hydraulics, since material-fluid-combinations typical for fluid power applications have yet to be investigated. This contribution is dedicated to designing and commissioning a small scale test bench for the investigation of electrostatic flow charging in a hydraulic context. To that end the modification of a Searle viscometer, the subsequent commissioning of the measuring circuit and initial results of a fluid-material-combination are presented in this paper.
