A paper on “Potential of Ferromagnetic Shape Memory Alloys as Power Units in Hydraulic Pumps” was published at the GFPS PhD Symposium in Samara.

Hydraulic power is generated in today's applications by displacement units. Here, the volume of fluid-filled spaces is cyclically reduced and enlarged. By a smart commutation fluid can be delivered. Current displacement units are the main cause of the poor hydraulic system efficiency. This is due to the many frictional contacts and sealing gaps, where hydraulic energy is lost. In addition, the energy conversion from the primary energy over the mechanical to the hydraulic causes losses.

This paper discusses the use of ferromagnetic shape memory alloys as power units in displacement units. These have a very high efficiency (over 99% are possible) in terms of converting magnetic into mechanical energy. A pump concept is presented and simulatively examined. The results show the principle suitability of the concept for the use of the shape memory alloy in pumps.
